[Opportunities]
Jonathan Cloud April 7th, 2007
“Every problem is also an opportunity.”
The War in Iraq… is an opportunity for people to reexamine their personal values; their willingness to believe or question their government; their concern for the wellbeing of others; their understanding of the reality of 650,000 Iraqis killed, more than 30,000 U.S. troops injured or dead; and their ability to resolve conflicts.
Unfortunately the Bush Administration failed to seize the opportunities it had after 9/11 to do good in the world, and chose instead to exacerbate conflict, fear, corruption, and incompetence. The American people are now in the process of correcting its worst errors – the war, the denial of global warming, the enormous deficit, the failure to address health care and other domestic issues, the neglect of FEMA and other responsibilities of government, the indiscriminate subversion of American democracy by such individuals as John Bolton, Karl Rove, Alberto Gonzales, David Addington, and Dick Cheney, not to mention George W. himself – but it will take a generation to discredit them, and we will continue to face new challenges to the ethics and integrity of the political system.
Global warming… is an opportunity to grow sustainable businesses, to develop new energy and environmental technologies, to foster the greening of capitalism
